Smart Devices for Smart Consumers

Here it is some stuff for the true geeks out there ;)

As the true geek you are, you should have an iPod. Now… I’d like to ask you one question: what can you do with your iPod color? Woah… surely you can listen to some music and store some data in it. You can even watch photos… You can use it as an external HDD. Yeah cool… but is that all?. If you thought yes you better think again. Check out the gameboy emulator for the 4G iPod and by the way check out the whole iPodLinux site. You’ll even find information on how to play videos (with sound) on your portable-evil-white-gadget!

iPod Linux

And that was only an iPod
Now think what you can do with the processing power of a PSP… with it’s wide display… with it’s PC connectivity… and with some “power user’s skill”. Cannot imagine anything but watching some backed up movie? Dude… you need to go and watch psp-news.dcemu.co.uk. Do you remember the old “homebrew” movement? Well then… this is the opportunity for the “community” to start all over again.

PSP

It seems like the PSP is quite hackable and it’s going to be fun! There is an Apple II emulator, a NES emulator, a PDF reader, a radio… hell yeah! That stuff is really amazing! And they found out that the 2.0 firmware is hackable too (by the way you can downgrade to a 1.5 firmware now… just go to the previously mentioned site to find out more)

iPod, PSP… but wait… I’ve heard of another portable tool

GP2X

The GP2X is a Linux Based, USB 2.0 handheld… look I don’t even know how to call it! Console? PC? Dunno… anyway it even runs DooM and Qauke and since it’s linux based it will have TONS of custom software for it! It’s a paradise for the homebrew scene! We could see every kind of app/game running on it.

Obviously you can view pics and play mp3s… and you can even watch movies (wmv and divx) on it or on your TV set via the TV out cable. You can play MAME games on it (oh my god I’m goin’ insane on this one!) or… whatever! read this:

It’s cheap. Just £124.99.

It’s open. You want to develop your own games for the GP2X? Go right ahead. The SDK is included with the system free. Not since the days of the Amiga has a system been so easy to develop for, commercially and for fun.

The GP2X isn’t just another wannabe be Gameboy. Its a whole different design. A whole new idea for a handheld games system.

It’s an incredible piece of hardware and software! And it runs on 2 AA batteries (rechargeable Ni-Mh will do fine I hope). Wanna find out more? Go to the official site: gp2x.co.uk.

Users and consumers are not simply users or customers anymore…
think about it

Pluck – the #1 browser-based RSS reader

September 26th, 2005 2 comments »

You all know what RSS is all about. I’m quite sure that you also know how to use those feeds… either with your software reader (Feeddemon, Feedreader…) or with some online services (such as Bloglines or Newgator). You may be using feeds on your site as well.

Pluck

Now, I’ve found this little firefox extension called Pluck! To tell the truth there is an IE edition and a Web Edition too but I’m stuck with the Firefox ed. because I’m so addicted to the mozilla’s toy that I don’t even care about the other versions! (ok dudes, I’ve tried the Web Version too and it rocks!). Firefox used to support feeds in the form of Live Bookmarks but to tell the truth I did not like it.

Take a look at the screenshot of Pluck here:

Pluck

Neat and Clean enough uh? It can import your OPML file and start refreshing your feeds in the firefox sidebar. Then you can view your favourite news in the browser page (or open them in new tabs).

Pluck RSS Reader Features

  • RSS Aggregator & Bookmark Manager: Pluck’s award-winning RSS reader delivers your favorite news or blog postings, plus your browser bookmarks.
  • FeedFinder: An integrated RSS feed directory and updated FeedFinder search engine help you find new sources quickly and easily.
  • Automatic Synchronization: Access your RSS feeds and bookmarks across all versions of Pluck with a single account.

It also has a nice Bookmarklet (I love these little stuff):

By adding the Pluck bookmarklet to your browser, you can subscribe to RSS feeds with a single click. When you’re on a page you want to subscribe to, just click on the bookmarklet and Pluck will add the site to your folders.

Integration with firefox is perfect. When you start using it, you can’t stop.

You can also import all of your bookmarks into the pluck account. Personally I LOVE this feauture because you don’t have to synch the bookmark’s file anymore among your firefox installations (or portable firefox that is…). Imagine all your bookmarks and feeds in one safe, remote place!

Awesome stuff… and the web-based version is pretty much the same. Using some new technology (Ajax?) you have the illusion of being using a software rather than a website! This is not quite like bloglines nor newsgator. Though we’re talking about the same kind of services, Pluck seems way better than the competitors. They invested so much into “integration” that with a single account you can use all the three versions of the service… and it will be like using always the same platform.

Subscribe, read, synchronize and search your feeds while never leaving your favourite browser software.

Google is all around us. And it’s growing day after day. Now featuring WiFi. (note though that Google Secure Access is a new product that is only available at certain locations in the San Francisco Bay Area).

The empire of the G is getting bigger and bigger and bigger… This company will be the most important company on Earth in less than 10 years… maybe less than 5… Google is definitely not a searching company… check out for the next stuff from the big G.

google

I’ve read interesting articles on Kottke.org about an Operating System and a browser… They are great articles that will help you understand what google is (probably going to be) all about.

oh by the way… the 15th of November will be published The Google Story. Personally I think I’m going to order a copy of it… I’m just curious.

The Google Story

This is the amazon book description:

Here is the story behind one of the most remarkable Internet successes of our time. Based on scrupulous research and extraordinary access to Google, the book takes you inside the creation and growth of a company whose name is a favorite brand and a standard verb recognized around the world. Its stock is worth more than General Motors’ and Ford’s combined, its staff eats for free in a dining room run by the Grateful Dead’s former chef, and its employees traverse the firm’s colorful Silicon Valley campus on scooters and inline skates.

…In 1998, Moscow-born Sergey Brin and Midwest-born Larry Page dropped out of graduate school at Stanford University to, in their own words, “change the worldâ€? through a search engine that would organize every bit of information on the Web for free.

While the company has done exactly that in more than one hundred languages, Google’s quest continues as it seeks to add millions of library books, television broadcasts, and more to its searchable database. Readers will learn about the amazing business acumen and computer wizardry that started the company on its astonishing course; the secret network of computers delivering lightning-fast search results; the unorthodox approach that has enabled it to challenge Microsoft’s dominance and shake up Wall Street. Even as it rides high, Google wrestles with difficult choices that will enable it to continue expanding while sustaining the guiding vision of its founders’ mantra: DO NO EVIL.

Still other great online articles are Defining Google from CBS and Can Google Stay Google?. I especially enjoyed the last one… speculating about a possible future of the company (will we see another SGI? ). Have fun reading at these… Think I’m going to have a drink now.

A brief introduction

Welcome to the new flipthedolphin.com. I’ll try to focus on 3 key factors: content, frequency and distribution. What I’m planning to do is to write about stuff everyone should care about. I’m talking about news (especially tech news). What kind of bra does my girlfriend wear is NOT a tipycal news you may find here (though you may be interested… but in that case you fall outside my target). And no, you won’t find any adult oriented content anymore. This site should be 100% safe for work

Content
Being a young and unexperienced dude, with no writing skills at all, I’ll try to scan the web for stuff I find pretty interesting (I have my sources and I’ll use every tech instrument I know to find cool stuff). Since my english capabilities are quite limited, you may find me doing heavy copy/paste works (at least I’ll be selecting and commenting great stuff for you). I may also review some software and some websites. I dig writing how-tos even if I find it pretty hard because of the language skills needed to do such a work. We’ll see.

Frequency
I won’t post daily. That’s a matter of fact. I’ve got a real life and this is not my full time job. I’m a student and I am quite busy. but I can tell you that I’m going to post at least twice a week. I may be posting even thrice or four times a week… the more I post, the more you should think of it as a gift. The motto is: quality twice a week is way better than crap everyday.

Distribution
Having moved my blog into the base directory of the server is a great step. Now you won’t see annoying “welcome pages” or stuff like that. Only content! Right now! Fast! I’ve tried to optimize the site to use less graphic elements than any previous blog I used to have. I’ve also written a page for my feeds. The layout of this site is quite simple and I’ll try to keep it as simple as I can. I may add some stuff like a better comment form (a simpler one to tell the truth) and some services like “recent posts”, “most viewed posts” and “related posts”. Feel free to link to me but please let me know if you do it so I can eventually link back to you.

That’s all. Thanks for your patience and welcome aboard.
